Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical dental procedure that removes plaque and tartar (hardened minerals) from above and below the gum line. It also smooths the root surfaces of the teeth to prevent bacteria from growing. Root Planing
Root planing is a procedure that involves smoothing rough spots on the roots of the teeth that can promote gum disease by trapping and holding bacteria.
It is like tooth scaling except it takes place on the roots of your teeth that sit below your gum line. During root planing, your provider uses a tool to gently push aside your gum tissue and expose the surface of the roots. They use the same tooth scaling tools to chip tartar from the roots, making them smooth.
