What is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)?
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is an FDA-approved antimicrobial liquid used to arrest (stop) active tooth decay and prevent new cavities from forming. It works by using silver to kill the bacteria causing decay, and fluoride to strengthen and remineralize the tooth structure — all without any drilling or injections.
SDF is particularly valuable for children, seniors, patients with special needs, and anyone with dental anxiety who may struggle with traditional cavity treatment. It is also used on hard-to-access cavities, root surface cavities common in seniors, and as a bridge treatment before a more permanent restoration.
Important Note
SDF causes arrested decay to turn dark brown or black. While this is a sign that the treatment is working, it is a cosmetic consideration patients should discuss with their hygienist before treatment.
How SDF Works
Silver Component
Silver ions kill the bacteria that cause tooth decay, stopping the cavity from progressing and protecting surrounding teeth from infection.
Fluoride Component

Application
